If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, the annual Hatfield-McCoy Shootout will be held Saturday, January 18 at the Williamson Fieldhouse and feature eight high school basketball games.

The event pits teams from Kentucky against schools from West Virginia.

The tournament director is Mark Whitt. The event is sponsored by Simpkins Law Office located in Williamson.

“We expect some great basketball games,” Whitt said. “Knott County Central is one of the top teams in Kentucky.”

Knott Central will be playing South Charleston, who is coached by former Logan High/WVU player Vic Herbert.

Knott Central is led by all-state candidate Camron Justice, who has already verbally committed to Tennessee. His father, former Belfry player and coach Raymond Justice, is an assistant coach for the team.

“You have all of our local teams playing. I know a lot of fans are looking forward to both the Sheldon Clark-Tug Valley and the Belfry-Mingo Central games,” Whitt added.

Several top-notch teams are featured in the all-day basketball extravaganza. Defending Class A state champion Tug Valley will take on Sheldon Clark in one of the evening contests. The Panthers are coached by Garland “Rabbit” Thompson and the Cardinals are coached by former Tug Valley coach Frankie Smith.

Knott County Central, one of the top teams in the Bluegrass State will take on South Charleston, one of the top Class AAA schools in West Virginia.

The final game of the night will feature two local rivals in their only regular season meeting of the season Belfry versus Mingo Central.

Greater Beckley Christian, one of the top Class A teams in the Mountain State, coached by former local resident Dan Burd, will take on Class AAA Hurricane.
