Friday night lights; local football schedule
by By Kyle Lovern
Belfry makes a long road trip out of state, Mingo Central drives up to Putnam County for a conference game and Tug Valley entertains one of the top Class A teams in the state tonight for Friday night lights.
The Belfry Pirates (6-0) are traveling to Knoxville, TN for a much- anticipated with Knoxville Christian.
The Pirates are still ranked No. 1 in Class 3A in the Bluegrass State. Knoxville Christian is only 2-4 this season, but Haywood said that record is deceiving.
“They play that tough inner city schedule,” Haywood said. “They have a very good offense. They can really pass, but they can also run the ball.”
Several Pirate players are nursing injuries and their status for the game in Knoxville is questionable, according to Haywood. This could make things a little tougher for the Pirates, especially on the road.
Mingo Central, 3-2 on the season, travels to Putnam County to take on the Poca Dots. The Dots are 1-5 on the season. Their only win came over Buffalo of Putnam and they have lost to Nitro, Nicholas County, Chapmanville, Scott and Herbert Hoover.
Mingo Central lost a tough game to No. 1 Wayne last week, but played the Pioneers tough at Buck Harless Stadium. The Miners own wins over Tolsia, Webster County and Westside. The other loss was against Wyoming East by one point in the season opener. MCHS is ranked No. 16 this week in Class 2A.
Tug Valley is now 2-4 on the season. They lost to East Ridge, Ky. last week. The Panthers have played without one of their top players the past few weeks. Senior running back/linebacker David Runyon pulled a hamstring early in the game against Tolsia two weeks ago. His status is day to day.
Tug Valley has an open date coming up next week. They defeated Sherman and Mt. View in their two wins. Besides East Ridge, Panthers also lost to Meadow Bridge, Haysi, Va. and Tolsia.
The Belfry game can be heard on WDHR 93.1 FM with Bobby Norman and Steve Mickey, while the Mingo Central game can be heard on WXCC 96.1 FM with Joe Kinzer and Pedro Ledger.
Other games in the region include: Phelps at Allen Central, Ashland Paul Blazer at Sheldon Clark, Chapmanville at Man, Scott at Wayne, Tolsia at Roane County, Herbert Hoover at Sissonville and Lawrence County at Pike Central.
