If the high school playoffs started this week, Mingo Central would be in, but by the skin of their teeth.

After last week’s tough loss to Wayne, the Miners dropped to No. 16 in the WVSSAC poll this week. Mingo Central was ranked 11th last week.

In the meantime, the Wayne Pioneers, the 2-time defending Class AA state champions, moved up to No. 1. Wayne was No. 3 last week. They are now 5-0, along with Frankfort, who is also 5-0.

Frankfort is ranked No. 2, but only by percentage points behind Wayne.

Wyoming East, a team that narrowly defeated Mingo Central in the season opener, is ranked No. 8. They come in this week with a record of 5-1.

Chapmanville, the opponent for the Miners of Coach Yogi Kinder next week, come in at No. 11 this week. The Tigers have a mark of 4-2.

In Class A, Tug Valley would not make the playoffs if the seeding were released this week. The Panthers, now 2-4, have dropped down to No. 20 this week after their loss last week to East Ridge.

TVHS will take on 3rd ranked Valley of Fayette at home this week. Next week they will take on Van, a team that is currently tied for No. 20 with the Panthers.

The Man Hillbillies are ranked No. 6 this week in Class A.

The top team in Class A is St. Marys. Weirton Madonna, who had been ranked No. 1, dropped to the second spot by percentage points.

Huntington, coming off a big win over Capitol last week, is No. 1 in Class 3A. The Highlanders are No. 1 in the big school classification, followed by George Washington, Wheeling Park and Point Pleasant.
