INEZ, Ky. – The Belfry game was what most people expected, an easy road win for the Pirates over district foe Sheldon Clark on Friday night at Inez, Ky.
The Pirates scored early and scored often to come away with a 49-6 win.
Belfry jumped out to a 7-0 lead as senior quarterback Sani Warren threw a strike to wide receiver Keaton Taylor for the first TD. The play went for 29 yards. Freshman Austin Woolum kicked the extra point.
Then on Sheldon Clark’s next possession, junior defensive back Keaton Taylor intercepted a Blake Harless pass at the Cardinal 39 yard line. Two plays later senior running back Justin Johnson danced into the end zone from 23 yards out. Woolum’s kick made it 14-0 with 6:01 left in the first quarter.
Belfry went up 21-0 as freshman tight end Raquan Horton scored his first career touchdown on a 43- yard pass plau from Warren. Once again Woolum split the uprights for the PAT.
Belfry had only ran five offensive plays and scored three touchdowns at this point in the game.
Pirate coach Philip Haywood and his staff started substituting early in the game.
Sheldon Clark got on the board with 9:30 left in the first half as Harless his fellow sophomore Brandon Butcher for a passing TD. The Cardinals put together a nice offensive drive. The conversion run failed, but the lead was 21-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, BHS sophomore Xondre Willis took a short kick and races 65 yards for another Belfry TD. The Woolum kick upped the scored to 28-6.
Belfry’s defense stopped the Cards on the next drive and took over with decent field position. The Pirates kept the football on the ground and quickly moved the pigskin down the field.
Warren scored on an option play and kept the ball after faking the toss as he scampered in from 15 yards out. Woolum’s kick made it 35-6.
Willis came up with an interception on the next Sheldon Clark drive and ran it in from 30 yards out. Woolum’s boot made the score 42-6 with 2:23 left in the first half.
The clock continued to run via the mercy rule the state of Kentucky has once a team gets a commanding 35 point lead.
Belfry got another score in the third quarter from the young freshman Andrew Fletcher. The kick made it 49-6.
Senior Reed Williamson came away with an interception in the fourth quarter.
Belfry’s reserves threatened to score, but time ran out before they could punch it into the end zone.
Warren was 2-of-2 passing for 72 yards and two TDs and he also rushed for a TD to lead Belfry.
The Pirates had a total of 310 yards on offense. They only carried the ball 20 times for 238 yards. The starters got very few snaps on offense. Belfry had 14 first downs.
Defensively T. J. Dotson had 7 tackles, Zack Thompson 6, Hayden Hatfield, Rayquan Horton and Cody Bostic each had five tackles. Taylor, Willis and Williamson each had an interception.
Belfry is now 5-0 on the season and will play host to Gallia Academy (Ohio) Friday night and it will be homecoming for the Pirates student body and fans.
Sheldon Clark is now 0-5 and will travel to Lawrence County this week.
