Mingo Central assistant coach Joey Fields said he is very excited about this Saturday. Coach Hank Speights, of Whitfield Athletix, whom has worked with Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller, will be coming to Mingo Central for a private training with their QBs.
Coach Speights has trained such signal callers as Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Johnny Manziel, Pat White, Ben Roethlisberger and many more. “This is a great opportunity for our quarterbacks and our team,” Fields said.
… Former Matewan football player Josh Sammons is playing in the defensive secondary for the Upike Bears. He intercepted a pass last week against Bluefield. In the season opener he recorded three tackles in the Bear’s upset over Morehead State. Sammons is coming back from a knee injury. There will be more on him in a future article.
… Jevon Carter has committed to the West Virginia University basketball team for the 2014 season. He plays at Proviso High School in Mayville, Illinois.
The 6-foot-2, 180-pound guard made his commitment to the Mountaineer coaches official this week. The senior, rated a 3-star by most online scouting services, is listed as a point guard with the ability to play shooting guard.
…. West Virginia linebacker d’Vante Henry has been dismissed from the team after his arrest on a second-degree sexual assault charge. The 21-year-old Henry was arrested Wednesday. A criminal complaint says a woman told deputies she had been sexually assaulted at an apartment Sunday.
Henry is a junior college transfer who didn’t participate in preseason practice. Football coach Dana Holgorsen says Henry’s no longer on the team.
