I love living in the mountains! I thank God on a regular basis for planting me-and my family-in the hills of eastern KY!

One of my very favorite moments is sitting on my back porch early in the morning. It’s heavenly to me. Almost everything is quiet, except for the birds announcing the day. We live next to a creek that’s against a mountain. It bubbles and gurgles. The dew covers the grass and leaves on all the trees. If I’m extra still, which is hard for me, I can hear tiny crackling noises. The sun may be drying the dew, but to me…it sounds like the trees are stretching as they wake up. And the mist hangs in the mountains.

I don’t know if “mist” is the right word, but you know what I’m talking about. It’s not fog all the way down to the road, but hovers at the tops of the valleys like a cloud. It makes me think of white cotton candy. We see it especially when we are travelling early.

One day I gushed as we topped a hill and saw the mist/cloud in the mountains. “Oh, I LOVE that!” I exclaimed-again. And then, my beloved told me a story from the Bible I did not know. When Solomon finished building the temple, God came down in the form of a cloud and filled the temple (I Kings 8). Verse eight says: “And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled His temple.” What an awesome true story! I have a great imagination so I could picture it all. I loved the part where the priests couldn’t get their work done because God was everywhere!!!

Now, every time I top a mountain and see the mist lingering in the valley, I think of the presence of the LORD. That’s what I want for all of the valleys in our area.

I want Him to fill our people with His presence, our churches, homes and schools with His presence. We need His cloud in our hospitals, nursing homes and doctor’s offices. In the court houses, post offices and jails…and I’m just getting started!

Early last Friday, I was walking around our church parking lot. As I came around the back of the building, I looked up and there it was: the mist or “cloud” I love so much! It was hanging right in the mountaintop of our hollow. I couldn’t help crying. (Getting teared up again now.) That’s what we need so much…the presence of the LORD. That’s what I WANT personally! I want to be what He wants me to be, go where He wants me to go, do what He wants me to do, and say what He wants me to say, even if I’m scared!

Are there any better verses for mountain people than Psalm 121:1-2? “I lift up my eyes to the mountains (hills)-where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

Not that I have to make a case for loving the mountains, but Jesus went up on the mountainside to pray all the
