To the editor:
Going back to Iraq? Looks that way does it not? Here are my comments:
It seems to me that most every neocon still living from the start of the second Iraq war are being brought forth in all types of media as a special guest to comment on the civil religious war in Iraq. I have not heard anyone bring forth strongly their original comments and results of their erroneous predictions.
Sadly for me is the thought that ALL NEWS is good news for a network, newsparer, magazine and politicians looking for viewers, and threats and war are hot new to attract large numbers of conciliatory listeners supporting an ass kicking foreign policy proving our nation’s prowess for conquest and control of various disputes, even complex civic war, as though these were slaughtering brutes killing innocent people and need us to save them. Bull!
They are not such, and Islam is 600 years behind the Christians and I compare this time for Islam with the religious wars in many, many countries that has have occurred, e.g., The 30 Year war (1618-48) between the Catholics and Protestant, and the many years of war in Ireland and adjacent territory, and our 160,000+ deaths in our civil war (most face to face killings). This was as brutal as ground combat has ever been. Who were the terrorists?
I quote, “The Iraq conflict plays out on several levels between Sunnis and Shiites. First and foremost, it’s about how to share power in a 21st century state. The prime minister, a Shiite, has failed abysmally in creating a formula to share power with the Sunnis, the traditional political masters in Iraq,” said Robin Wright, a joint fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Woodrow Wilson Center, non-partisan institutions.’
Tension between other countries in the region has also stoked the fighting, which revives suspicions that have existed between Shiites and Sunnis that date back 1,400 years, and we are to fix that to get our piece of the petro pie. We should let them work it out as did our Christianity; peace between Catholic and Protestant, and our racial factions slowly working a confederacy after 50 years.
If we had kept our nose out of the Middle East, the 9/11, would never had occurred. Our country was warned several times of an oncoming assault on our property and people and had suffered from a few of these prior to 9/11, still we tried to renew the colonial style diplomacy and reconstruct their theocracies to democracies. Oil, yes it was about oil!
It did not and never will work in societies where people are willing to die to win and use their bodies as weapons (that is their most effective weapon). Robert Pate wrote a good book on this subject.
Let us stay out of this civil war and use our commerical wealth and know how to get access to fossil fuels and other resources as needed. This is actually a cheaper price to pay from other producers than going to war and occupying other countries as we do today.
