The Williamson Police Department is investigating an incident that occurred on Third Avenue on Labor Day when a female victim allegedly had her throat cut with a box cutter.
Patrolman Josh Tincher responded to the 911 domestic assault call at about 4 p.m. Monday at the apartments above Jacob’s Well near the old Cantees Department store location.
Tincher said he found 29-year-old Summer Sowards with cuts on her throat and one deeper, but non-life-threatening cut under her chin that required stitches.
Sowards alleges she was cut by Mark A. Smith, 41, of Williamson, formerly of Turkey Creek, Ky.
WPD Chief Barry Blair said the two subjects are well known to local law enforcement agencies and are acquaintances.
Smith was arrested and lodged in the Southwestern Regional Jail with charges pending of either malicious wounding or attempted murder, according to police. Blair said the prosecuting attorney’s office will decide which charges to bring.
Sowards was taken to a local hospital, where she received stitches and was treated and released, according to police. Sowards reportedly was to have an emergency protective order filed against Smith on Tuesday.
She went by the police station Tuesday afternoon to make her official statement.
The investigation is ongoing, according to Blair.
