CHATTAROY – The Chattaroy Church of God has started a new monthly luncheon for members of the local community, and the first event was extremely successful.

Pastor Mike Bostic and his wife, Patty, decided the area could benefit from being provided a free, “no strings attached” hot meal once a month.

“There seems to be such a great need in our community and surrounding areas, and we just felt a strong desire to help feed people,” said Patty Bostic. “We don’t really have a place for a food pantry right now so we decided to start by simply feeding people a hot meal one day a month.”

Bostic said the church has been blessed with several great cooks and members who wanted to help in the community, so the idea came from a desire to help others. They are calling the monthly event “Spoonful of Love.”

“This is one day a month where we can all have lunch together,” Bostic said. “We invite anyone in our community to come in and share a meal, no strings attached. “

Bostic stressed that there are no requirements for attending the free luncheon.

“It doesn’t matter if they are high- or low-income, if they come to church or not, or if they have ever attended a church service with us,” she said. “It just seems like such a great need in our community right now, with more layoffs every day. We know things just get tight for people and it is our goal to show love, one spoonful at a time.”

“When we were discussing the idea of having a monthly free luncheon, I wanted to stress to all church members that we would not be judgmental,” Bostic said. “It doesn’t matter about finances and it doesn’t matter if they are a church member or not. I didn’t want us to focus on anything like that. Somebody needs a good, hot meal. I wanted it to be our job to provide that, regardless of the person’s circumstances.”

Bostic said more than 150 spaghetti dinners were served at “Spoonful of Love” on Tuesday, and she expects even more to show up for the next luncheon, which will be held Sept. 16.

She said the event was a blessing to be a part of, and she is happy she could help feed others. She added that she is thankful for the members who helped her by cooking, serving food and donating food items.

“Anytime you share the love of Jesus and show people you care, it will draw them to the Lord,” Bostic said.

“Spoonful of Love” luncheons will be held the third Tuesday of every month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.
