WILLIAMSON – Kentucky residents who carry sport hunting and fishing licenses valid in Kentucky may now hunt and fish along the Tug River and its embayments or from the West Virginia banks of the Tug/Big Sandy River and its embayments without obtaining a West Virginia license.

Likewise, West Virginia residents who carry sport hunting or fishing licenses valid in West Virginia may hunt or fish on Tug/Big Sandy River embayments in Kentucky or from the Kentucky banks of the Tug/Big Sandy River and embayments without obtaining a Kentucky license.

West Virginia sport hunting and fishing laws and regulations must be followed when hunting or fishing on the Tug/Big Sandy River mainstream and on embayments or tributaries that are within the boundaries of West Virginia.

Kentucky hunting and fishing laws and Tug/Big Sandy River hunting and fishing regulations for the Eastern Unit, which covers the West Virginia/Kentucky border, must be followed while hunting or fishing on embayments or tributaries that are within the boundaries of Kentucky.

The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources has determined that the recognition of each state’s hunting and fishing licenses and hunting licenses on the Big Sandy and Tug Fork Rivers is in the best interest of the citizens of their respective states.

Tributary boundaries shall be defined as a straight line between opposite points where the stream or embayment connects with the main body of the Big Sandy or Tug Fork River, and banks shall be defined as the land immediately adjacent to and which slopes toward the bed of the watercourse, not to exceed 50 feet horizontally from the mean high water line.

The embayment and tributary reciprocal boundaries for each state are listed in the Waterfowl Hunting and Fishing on the Tug River brochure available from West Virginia DNR offices, and online at www.wvdnr.gov.

Kentucky and West Virginia anglers may travel, hunt and fish embayments and tributaries to the landmark locations listed in the brochure. These locations are also defined by distance from the mouth of the tributary and GPS coordinates for convenience.
