WILLIAMSON - Early voting began Wednesday in Mingo County, and during the first day, more than 60 people showed up to take advantage of the opportunity to vote now, rather than later.

Early voting will be offered at the Mingo County Courthouse through May 10, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. If you wish to cast your vote with an absentee ballot, you must call the Mingo County Clerk’s office at 304-235-0330, and request rthat one be mailed to you. You will then need to complete the form and mail it back to the clerk’s office to receive a ballot in the mail. Those ballots must be postmarked no later than May 12 and returned promptly, in order to be counted.

This weekend, the 3rd Annual “Rally in the Valley” motorcycle event will take place in Williamson from Thursday through Sunday, which may cause some minor confusion on where to park to best access the courthouse. Second Avenue will be open to through traffic, but no one except motorcyclists will be allowed to park there. However; the county employee parking lot located on the right side of the courthouse will be open to accommodate those wishing to vote, or who have other county business to attend to.

If you have questions about early voting, acquiring an absentee ballot or the traffic conditions during the rally, you may contact Judy Harvey or Marlena Cisco at the County Clerk’s office by calling the number given above.

State officials say early voting has been a popular option for West Virginians since its implementation for the 2002 primary.

In the last six statewide elections, about one in every five votes cast were cast during the early voting period.

New voter registration totals show there are more than 1.2 million registered voters in the state, with Democrats outnumbering Republicans 625,520 to 352,610.

More than 221,700 people registered with no party affiliation.
