WILLIAMSON - Several local residents have reported receiving a credit offer in the mail that claims to be through the United Workers Credit Services, which, according to the West Virginia State Attorney General’s office, is a scam being used to obtain the recipients’ personal information.

The letterhead displays the return address of United Workers Credit Services, located in Dallas, Texas, and states that the recipient of the offer has been preapproved for a platinum card membership and is guaranteed a $10,000 credit limit that is valid exclusively toward any purchases from the credit provider themselves.

The offer states that no matter if you have been denied credit in the past, this membership offers benefits that include a low interest rate of 5 percent APR, because of being preapproved. It says that the full details of the membership and its exclusive benefits will be mailed along with the new card, and urges the recipient to enclose a membership fee of $37 by a personal check, as well as the enclosed application form, in the mail as soon as possible, since it is a limited time offer.

The Daily News spoke with Mingo County Sheriff James Smith, and he strongly urges anyone who receives such an offer or one of a similar nature to contact his office before activating, the card, sending your personal information or money.

“There are a lot of fraudulent schemes out there that prey on easy victims such as our elderly residents or those who are in a financial bind,” Smith said. “I urge everyone to follow their gut instinct. If it doesn’t sound logical or appears too good to be true, it probably is.

“Don’t take a chance of being a victim of identity theft,” the sheriff said. “Call us or come by the office and a member of our department will be more than happy to check it out for you to see if it is indeed a valid offer.”

You may contact Smith by calling 304-235-0300.
