HUNTINGTON - The man accused of walking up to a police cruiser driven by the late Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum last April and shooting him twice at point-blank range appeared in Cabell County Circuit Court on Tuesday, and was granted a motion to have his murder trial placed on hold.

Tennis Melvin Maynard appeared in court Tuesday morning for a motion hearing that lasted less than 10 minutes. Cabell County Circuit Judge Paul Farrell, who was assigned to the case, along with the defense attorneys and prosecution, met privately in the judge’s chambers before returning to the open courtroom. After returning to the courtroom, Farrell announced that the trial would put on hold, but no reason was given.

Kanawha County Prosecutor Mark Plants, who was appointed to prosecute the case, said health records for the defendant are sealed and remain confidential. Plants would not confirm or deny whether Maynard’s health records were the reason for Tuesday’s hearing.

There is no word on when, or if, the trial will be rescheduled, or if there is any truth to the rumors that Maynard will be undergoing extensive psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.
