WILLIAMSON - What would have been a citable offense with no jail time turned into an arrest, after officers with the Williamson Police Department (WPD) received the whole story on a circumstance that occurred on Thursday afternoon in the downtown area.

According to the criminal complaint, WPD Lt. G.P. Dotson and Patrolmen J.D. Tincher and J. Marcum were dispatched to investigate a complaint made of a female that was allegedly hunkering down in the rear doorway of the Williamson Christian School, smoking marijuana.

After arriving at the location, the officers found Vanessa Reney Fields (Rubel), 28, of Alderson Street in Williamson, partially laying on the steps of the back door of the school which is next to the Pizza Tyme restaurant, the business where Fields is said to be employed. She was caught with a marijuana cigarette in her hand.

“What was so shocking about the incident is that in the position the defendant had placed herself, the smoke she was exhaling while smoking the marijuana was going under the door, with small children being directly on the other side,” explained Patrolman Tincher. “We couldn’t believe what she was doing.”

When faced with the allegations, Fields reportedly told the police that “I’m not going to lie - I was just smoking some weed while I was on my break with my job.” No explanations were given as to why she was blowing the smoke underneath the door of the school.

Fields was arraigned before Mingo County Magistrate Dee Sidebottom and was transported to the Southwestern Jail on a possession of marijuana charge and was later released from custody after successfully posting bail. She will be back in court in the near future to answer these charges.
