LOGAN - The 2014 Southern W.Va. Poverty Awareness Week is scheduled May 5-10.

PAW is a joint collaboration between local agencies and organizations across the southern portion of the state who realize the importance of fighting poverty in a collective and unified manner.

Partnering agencies for this project understand that in order to truly make a significant impact in the War on Poverty, it will take a concerted effort from social services agencies, faith-based organizations, community leaders and the business community all working together.

Southern W.Va. PAW is an opportunity to promote awareness and solutions for the poverty epidemic plaguing the southernmost counties of the state. The objective is to provide a way to gain a better understanding of what poverty really is, identify systemic and generational barriers to poverty and develop ways to help individuals and families gain success and learn to thrive on their own.

By creating a campaign to bring the public face-to-face with poverty in Southern West Virginia, the issues are brought to the forefront and may help break down stereotypes about poverty and socio-economic status. The purpose of this event is to promote and develop cross-community collaborations to improve capacity and effectiveness in fighting poverty in Southern West Virginia.

PAW will host a kickoff event on Monday at noon at the PRIDE Central Offices in Logan. State Sen. Ron Stollings, who is a member of the Senate Select Committee on Child Poverty, will be a guest speaker, and U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall will be the keynote speaker for the event. There will be free food and resource providers on hand to assist interested people in signing up for area resources and services.

Several other events and activities are planned at various locations around Logan County throughout the week, including a Prayer Against Poverty event, Poverty Simulation and Workshop, film screenings, social media events/discussion and donation drives. For more information and a complete listing and schedule of activities and events visit the website at www.PovertyAware.org.

Southern West Virginia PAW is sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee, Coventry Cares of West Virginia, Dignity Hospice, Healthy Logan County, LEAD Community Organization, Logan-Mingo Area Mental Health. Looking At Appalachia.org, the Nighbert Memorial United Methodist Church, PRIDE Community Services Inc, and Wendling’s Food Service.
