WILLIAMSON - The dedicated members of the Mingo County Autism Association are in the process of planning their first Christmas Extravaganza for children in the local area who have been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, and are asking for assistance from the public with this endeavor.

Judith Stepp, one of the founders of the organization, told the Williamson Daily News that all children with this disorder, along with their family, qualifies for the upcoming Christmas party. The children will receive a present, a stocking filled with goodies and a visit from the “Sensitive Santa”. Applications are now being accepted from families who reside in Mingo, Logan, and Pike County, Ky.

There are several ways the public can assist with the special night. You can make a monetary donation, or take a name off of the Autistic Angel Tree. If you are willing to sponsor an Angel, you will be provided with a card that will list the gender of the child, along with their age and a desired toy. The organization requests that the gifts be in the $20 range to assure that each child receives a quality present. You may also make donations of food, drinks and prizes for games for the Extravaganza.

The group would also like to announce that it’s time to give back and help the Autistic children in Mingo County to a greater level than before, and plan to award a $500 grant to one lucky individual during the month of December. To qualify for the grant, the child has to be above the age of three, be a resident of the county and have received a diagnoses of Autism.

The grant can be used for a variety of things, including a piece of equipment, therapeutic services, utility bills, clothing, etc. The grant will not be given directly to the child or the parents/guardians, but will be paid directly to the business or agency where the purchases are made.

If you are interested in applying for the grant, you may email the group at www.mingocoautismassociation@gmail.com, and you can also visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Mingo CountyAutismAssociation. You may also call Stepp at 304-426-4144, Brandy Fields at 304-235-2049 or Wendy Barker at 304-235-0788.
