Today I want to pose a question to us all. Who is responsible for sharing the name of Jesus to the World? I know there are many thoughts and answers that are coming to many brains in the Tug Valley area at this moment. For some, the answer is simple: it is up to the pastors, preachers and teachers. For others the answer may not be so simple. Maybe you have no idea. Yet there is no doubt that many people believe it is the delightful duty of every Christian to share the sweet story of our Savior Jesus Christ.
If you say pastors and preachers you are in part right. Romans 10:15 states “And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” So we see here, according to Holy Scripture, yes pastors, preachers and evangelists are indeed responsible for sharing the hope of Jesus Christ to this world.
Maybe you say teachers. Again, you are in part right, James 3:1 proclaims “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly”. So we again see that teachers are required to have the knowledge of leading people to Christ. Scripture is also very clear for teachers. It is not just a suggestion, it is a requirement. (It has to be understood that exact Greek translation may be a little different with the Scriptures shared today but I hardly have the space in this column to address Greek or Hebrew translation.)
Perhaps you are part of the people who believe it is the duty of every Christian to share the Gospel of Christ. It is my summation through study of the Scriptures that it is indeed not only the duty but the delight of all people that follow Christ to share the “Good News” of a merciful Christ to a lost world that is desperately looking for direction. 1 Peter 3:15 “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:”. Scripture is plain that we should always be ready to give an answer, or share, why we have hope in us. Jesus also commands in Matthew 28:19-20 “ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen”
We must remember that it is the duty of EVERY Christian to share the gospel of Christ. Also, it must be understood that a simple invitation to church is not sharing the Gospel of Christ. What if that person does not live to make it to church Sunday? What if they are experiencing a tremendous problem and need help immediately, right there in public? Remember, Christians have to always be ready to share why we are filled with hope. We cannot simply let our Pastor have that delight or simply put our duty off on preachers, pastors and teachers.
It is the up to each and every Christian to be ready to share the hope of Christ, whether in Rite-Aid or on a river bank. Over the past month we have shared that God can use anyone regardless of your past mistakes or failures. People need Christ no matter where they are. Let our prayer be “Dear Christ, You have brought such joy to my life. I know I have had some hard, difficult times But I also know I have not walked through them alone. You have constantly held my hand. Please give me the strength to defeat shyness, shame and any other obstacle that keeps me from sharing Your hope to those that need to hear it no matter where we may be. I pray you give me Strength for the Moment. Amen.”
