WILLIAMSON - What started as a routine traffic stop for defective equipment and parking in a no-parking zone led to a DUI arrest for a Pike County, Ky., woman.

On Wednesday afternoon, Williamson Patrolman J.D. Tincher saw a vehicle pulling into a no-parking zone across from the Tug Valley Pharmacy on Second Avenue. Upon making contact with the driver, Sonya Damron, 34, of Pikeville the officer quickly detected signs of possible intoxication that included slurred speech, unsteady gait and a glazed expression. Damron was asked to consent to a three-part field sobriety test, which she agreed to attempt.

Damron was said to have failed to successfully complete the series of tests, and was placed under arrest on charges of DUI, improper parking and defective equipment. Although Damron continued to plead her innocence, Tincher said it was clear to him that she was under the influence of alcohol, and/or drugs and did not need to be behind the wheel of a car.

Two passengers who were in the vehicle with Damron were questioned and searched, but were not detained.

Damron was taken to Williamson Memorial Hospital for alcohol/drug testing, and was then arraigned in Mingo County Magistrate Court. She was remanded to the custody of the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden pending bail.
