CHARLESTON – Chief Public Defender Teresa McCune was the guest speaker at a lunch meeting of the West Virginia Women Attorneys group at the law firm of Robinson and McElwee in Charleston, West Virginia, on Thursday, March 4. State bar director Anita Casey also updated the women at the lunch on the workings of the State Bar.
McCune highlighted some of the accomplishments and challenges of her 37 year career as a lawyer in Mingo County and then moderated a spirited discussion amongst luncheon attendees about issues facing women of all ages in all areas of the practice of law.
Sandy Kinney of Bailey and Glasser led the initiative in forming the group, which has met for several lunch and evening sessions around the state. In December, the women held a fundraising event for Legal Aid of West Virginia.
“We are now a member of the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations,” said McCune. “It would be great to see more women from southern West Virginia take part in our organization and maybe host some meetings in our part of the state”.
NCWBA is an organization of women’s bar associations that provides a national forum for exchanging ideas and information vital to organizational growth and success in today’s profession. “We’re building on the experience of established and successful groups to strengthen and expand what we started as a Facebook group,” Kinney said. “In less than two months, our group grew to over 550 lawyers.
“Membership in the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations gives us access to content and resources to help us formalize our group and map our path for the future. Once we have our organizational structure in place, we can get to work helping fellow women lawyers reach the highest level of achievement in their practice areas.”
The group is hosting a Continuing Legal Education session on Title IX in Martinsburg on March 16, presented by Ann Lewin of Shepherd University. It will meet again on April 6 at the law firm of Jackson Kelly in Charleston, with Ellen Cappellanti, the firm’s Managing Member, as the guest speaker.
