WILLIAMSON – The Williamson Police Department plans to conduct police civil service examinations to generate a list of potential hires.
The examination will be given by the Williamson Police Civil Service Commission on May 31, 2017 by the Williamson Police Civil Service Commission at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Williamson City Hall located at 142 East Fourth Avenue.
Applications can be picked up at Williamson City Hall and must be returned to the Williamson City Clerk’s Office by noon Monday, April 14. Interested applicants must first pass a strength and agility test to be eligible to take the written examination. A strength and agility test will be conducted Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at the West Williamson Floodwall.
The matter was brought to the Williamson City Council for approval by Williamson Police Chief, Barry Blair at the last regular council meeting.
The Williamson Police Department’s current list of potential hires will soon expire. “I would like to ask the city council to give forth permission to give a police civil service examination so we can have a list of eligible people to choose from for potential hires. Right now, I understand that we aren’t hiring anyone but we currently have one person on the civil service list but it will soon expire,” Blair stated.
Having a list of potential hires is important for the police department as some officers will soon retire. “It is only logical and makes sense that we would keep a current up to date list in case we were to hire someone. This year, we have the potential of maybe two or three officer’s retiring. I would like to go ahead and start that process,” Blair said.
Providing the examination will not cause the city of Williamson to incur any out of pocket costs. “It will not cost the city of Williamson anything. We currently have a Police Civil Service Commission who will administer the test. We also have the test booklets. It will not cost the town any money to have a current list. That is the process we have to go through; take applications, give the civil service examination and then provide a list of eligible people who pass the exam,” Blair said.
Councilwoman Judy Hamrick stated, “That sounds like it would be prudent. I will make a motion that we do that.”
The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
