GILBERT, W.Va. – On Monday, November 21 during the monthly town council meeting Gilbert was recognized by the Military Order of the Purple Heart as a “Purple Heart Town”. Council members were presented with a plaque.
Gilbert joined a growing number of cities and towns across the nation being recognized for their support to wounded military veterans and their families.
According to their website the mission of the Military Order of the Purple Heart is to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among combat wounded veterans, promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and most importantly, provide service to all veterans and their families.
All but one council member was in attendance at the meeting and the council quickly got down to business, the first order of business on the night was the first reading of the water rate increase ordinance.
“This increase was supposed to have taken place two years ago when the line was installed to add on residents in the Horsepen, Browning Fork and Gilbert Creek areas, however, due to the economic downturn in the economy we tried to hold off as long as we could, now we are out of time, we are being mandated to increase the rates.”, Said Mayor Vivian Livingood.
The increase will take place starting with the February invoice, which reflects the water usage in the month of January. The base rate will be $25.50.
Plans were finalized for the Christmas Parade which is scheduled for Friday, December 9. The parade is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. and line up will start at 4:30 p.m. The parade will start at the Gilbert Volunteer Fire Department.
