Halcy Hatfield named Mingo’s Democrat of the Year

DELBARTON – The Mingo County Democratic Executive Committee met in special session on Monday, September 19, and selected long- time and well-known Mingo County Democrat Halcy Hatfield as Mingo County Democrat of the Year.

This year marks the 31st annual Democrat of the Year awards. According to the award documentation, the individual selected, “epitomizes the philosophy of the Democratic Party and has clearly demonstrated his support for the Democratic government by helping assure the election of the party’s nominees on the local, state and national levels.”

The Executive Committee selects an outstanding Democrat each year to represent their county at the annual State Jefferson-Jackson (J-J) Day Dinner.

The J-J Dinner will be held this year in Charleston, W.Va. on October 8 at the Charleston Civic Center.

Hatfield is a former Mingo County Commissioner and is a life- long resident of Mingo County and resides in Elk Creek located in the Delbarton area of Mingo County.

Committee Chairman, H. Truman Chafin, thanked the committee for its selection and said, “No one is more deserving to be honored with this outstanding award than Mr. Hatfield, who has contributed so much to our Democratic party and as a public servant, has done so much for so many in our county.”

The special meeting was called to replace the regularly scheduled meeting set for September 20 in accordance with 7-3-C of the W.Va. Democratic Party Rules and 3-1-30 of the W.Va. Code, which requires election officials to be nominated by the Executive Committee 49 days before the general election on November 8, 2016.

The Committee also voted to join with the Mingo County Democratic Women’s Club to hold a joint Democratic party and rally on Monday, October 3 at the Cinderella Theater Building in Williamson. At 6 p.m.

Mingo Democratic Chairman, H. Truman Chafin and Mingo County Democratic Women’s President, Hester Keatley, have invited all candidates and all elected officials to the rally to be introduced. Food, music, speeches and an old fashioned Meet the Candidate rally will feature several statewide candidates and Chairman Chafin and President Keatley urge everyone to attend and join in the celebration.
