Mingo BOE releases school dates/times

MINGO, W.Va. – With back to school right around the corner, the Mingo County Board of Education (BOE) has released information regarding calendar dates and school start times for the 2016- 2017 school term.

Students in grades first through twelfth will go back to school on August 11, 2016. Kindergarten students will start school on August 16. Students in Pre-K, Head Start, or the MU STEAM Center will start school on August 22, 2016.

Schools throughout Mingo County will start at various times. Burch PK-8 will start at 8:20 a.m. Dingess Elementary will start at 7:45 a.m. Gilbert Elementary will start at 8:15 a.m. Gilbert Middle will also start at 8:15 a.m. Kermit PK-8 will start at 7:45 a.m. Lenore PK-8 will start at 8:20 a.m. Matewan PK-8 will start at 8:25 a.m. Mingo Central High School will start at 7:08 a.m. Tug Valley High School will start at 7:20 a.m. Williamson PK-8 will start at 8:30 a.m.

The first day for school employees will be August 8. The first semester will end on December 22. The last day of the instructional term is scheduled for May 19, 2017. The last day for the school employment term will be May 31, 2017.

There will be five Faculty Senate Meetings in the upcoming school term. Meetings have been scheduled on August 8, 2016, October 7, 2016, December 16, 2016, February 17, 2017 and April 13, 2017.

Several holidays will be observed throughout the school term. Students will not report to school on scheduled holidays. According to the 2016-2017 calendar, the following holidays will be observed: Labor Day on September 5, General Election on November 8, Veteran’s Day on November 11, Thanksgiving Day on November 24, Christmas Day on December 26, New Year’s on January 2, Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday on January 16, and Memorial Day on May 29.

This year, 34 out- of – calendar days have been scheduled. The maximum number of out – of- calendar days possible is 40 in order that the 200 day employment term does not exceed 48 weeks. Out – of – calendar days must be used to make up canceled instructional days. In November, the 23 and 25 have been scheduled as out- of – calendar days. In December, the 23, 27, 28, 29, and 30 have been scheduled as out- of- calendar days. In March, the 20 through 24 have been scheduled as out- of- calendar days. In April, the 14 has been scheduled as an out – of – calendar day. In June, the 1 through 19 have been scheduled as out – of- calendar days as well as the 21 through 30.
