Attempted escape falls through

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A man lodged in the Pike County Detention Center (PCDC) on a misdemeanor assault charge, now faces additional charges after he attempted to escape.

Bruce Cordell, 18, of Louisville, who was originally housed in the PCDC after he was sentenced to 12 months for a fourth degree assault charge in Floyd County, tried to escape from the jail Sunday night by somehow getting out of his cell and into the jail’s duct work.

Pike County Jailer Freddie Lewis said Cordell was in the ceiling above the female isolation pod when the ceiling gave way and he fell through. “You know I’m made to believe that there’s nothing people won’t do any more,” Lewis said. “There’s nothing people won’t try, nothing that they come up with surprises me or shocks me.”

Cordell was not injuried.

The jailer says Cordell will be charged with attempted escape and criminal mischief; he could face an additional one to three years if convicted.
