LOGAN, W.Va. — A family that “plays” together stays together.
The Aracoma Story Inc.’s production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” will be presented next month at Chief Logan State Park and two area mother/son teams will be sharing the stage together.
Curtis Crum of Delbarton will be playing “The Beast” in the production and his mother, Deanna Crum, will be featured in the role of Mrs. Potts. “We’ve been in different shows over the years but never shared the same stage.” Curtis Crum said it was his mom who encouraged him to try out. That is when he decided bring her along with him. “It’s really good to have a friend with you and having a traveling partner doesn’t hurt either. I am so proud of hard she is working.”
Deanna Crum jokingly said to her son, “I should do this too. It’s been on my bucket list for awhile.” She said the joke started becoming a reality as her son started relentlessly prodding her on to audition. “I was glad he did though. It has been such an extraordinary experience,” Deanna Crum said.
Charles Wallace, who is playing the role of Belle’s father, Maurice, says this has been great experience for him and mom. “She’s always been so supportive of me and it’s very special that I’m able to share it with her.”
Wallace’s mother, Ladie Marcum Viars, said she enjoyed watching her son as Gomez in last summer’s Aracoma Story production of “The Addams Family” that she decided to audition herself. She will be playing the role of the enchanted Wardrobe, Madame. Viars says her son has been with her through every step of the process. “He helped me with my audition material, helped me learn lines, and gives me advice. I couldn’t have done it without him.”
Having families onstage together is nothing new to The Aracoma Story. “We’ve had entire families in a single production,” according to Bill France, board of directors member. “A show is like a family experience. Everyone becomes close as they struggle toward one common goal. It’s hard work but it’s so worth it in the end.”
“Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” will be open on Thursday, June 9th and run for three weeks, Thursday through Sunday. The last performance will be Sunday, June 26th. The show will be presented at the Liz Spurlock Amphitheatre in Chief Logan State Park. A special kids pre-show of “Disney Extravaganza” will take the stage at 8pm. “Beauty and the Beast will begin at 8:30pm. For ticket information call 304-752-0253 or visit www.thearacomastory.com.
