GOODY, Ky. – A longtime and popular business in the Tug Valley area is closing its doors.

Magic Mart was founded by the Ammar Family in 1920 when the Ammar brothers opened Ammar Brothers’ Department Store on Third Avenue in downtown Williamson, West Virginia. In 1967 the Ammars opened the first Magic Mart in Grundy, Virginia.

K.A. Ammar III (Trey), President of Ammar’s, Inc., the parent company of the Magic Mart retail business, said the closing is “unfortunate.”

“This was a hard decision to make. But the current economic conditions here in the heart of the coalfields leave us with no alternative. We have tried very hard over the past few years to find ways to keep our store open here and we just haven’t been able to find a way,” Ammar stated.

The local Magic Mart store was first located in the Appalachian Plaza in 1969. Then it moved toward Belfry along U.S. 119 in 1991, the location that is now a Tug Valley ARH clinic. From that spot it relocated to the South Side Mall at Goody, Ky. in 2005.

“For almost 100 years, Ammar Brothers and Magic Mart have been a part of the Tug River Valley, operating on both sides of the river, serving multiple generations of friends and families. It has been our privilege and honor to have been a part of this area for so long,” Ammar said.

Ammar said that the South Side Mall was a good location and that the owners were “good landlords.” He stated that he hoped the mall owners could get someone to go back into that location.

“We hate to see them leave,” said Sheryle Sullivan, Manager of the local mall. “It is very sad.”

“We are already working on a prospective client to fill that space,” Sullivan said.

The department store started running ads in the Williamson Daily News on Thursday that it was closing and offering 20 percent off of everything in the store.

The store is scheduled to close at the end of business on May 8.

“We have been fortunate to have loyal and hard-working employees throughout our time here,” Ammar added, “but we have to make a change. Our hope is that our current employees will find employment with some of the other fine businesses in the area.”

Magic Mart also has stores in, Abingdon, Norton, Grundy, Richlands, North Tazewell, Pulaski and Galax in Virginia, Coal Run and Hazard, Kentucky, Beckley, Danville, Fairlea, Hinton, Oceana, Rainelle, Teays Valley and Welch in West Virginia and Lexington and Salisbury in North Carolina.

The corporate headquarters for Magic Mart is located in Bluefield, Virginia.
