PILGRIM, Ky. – Acting on an anonymous tip, agents from the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Bureau (ATF) and the Martin County Sheriff’s Department discovered 720 pounds of explosives at Dan’s Branch in Pigeon Roost, Kentucky

Martin County Sheriff John Kirk explained that the investigation began when explosives were reported missing from the Revelation Energy Mining site. “The explosives had been reported missing two weeks prior,” Kirk said.

Kirk stated that an anonymous tip provided law enforcement with a person of interest. “We had a reason to look into it. We had a description of a vehicle and the explosives were found near a residence in a vacant lot a few miles from where it was stolen,” Kirk said.

“The explosives found are known as ‘prell’; a blasting agent made from fertilizer and diesel fuel. They are very dangerous,” Kirk explained.

The investigation is ongoing by ATF Special Agent Ryan McComas and the Sheriff’s office. At this time, no arrest has been made concerning this case. “This is a federal case and still under investigation,” Kirk explained.

Deputies Chris Todd, Evertt Kirk, Billy Patrick and Clinton Mullins assisted in the investigation. The vacant dump is located about three miles from the mine site. The explosives were found under about a foot of snow.

Kirk stated that he “is pleased this highly explosive material was recovered before it could be used in a harmful way.”

The large bags were carefully placed in a container and turned over to the ATF agents.

Suspicious activity can be reported to the Martin County Sheriff’s Department at 606-298-2828.
