PHELPS, Ky. — The Pike County Sheriff’s Department and Superintendent of Schools Reed Adkins are investigating an altercation that took place during a middle school basketball game last Thursday at Phelps High School.
Officials are in possession of a cell phone video that shows the altercation, and Adkins says they are still looking into what happened at the Phelps versus Belfry Middle School 8th grade boys basketball game.
“We’re reviewing the video very carefully to make sure we do the right thing,” Adkins said. “It is still under investigation, but we’re hoping to wrap things up very soon.”
According to Adkins, an altercation broke out between adults during Thursday night’s ball game. At least one of the parties involved in the fight was a coach.
“I’m glad to say there were no students involved in the situation,” Adkins said. “I’m happy to say also, to my knowledge, no one was injured.”
Adkins says the behavior of all parties involved is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the school district.
“We certainly are not going to tolerate that type of behavior on any of our school campuses or at any of our school events,” Adkins said. “We’re still under investigation, and there will be disciplinary action handed down for each and every individual that took part in the altercation, whether they are part of the school system or not. We are actually in the process of hammering out those details, and we’re in the final stages of that.”
Adkins described the scene as unfortunate, and says officials are working swiftly to figure out the correct actions to take from this point forward.
