DELBARTON – Mathew Ezra Farley, 30 from Delbarton, was arrested by the West Virginia State Police (WVSP) on felony charges Tuesday Nov. 17, for three counts of conspiracy and three counts of grand larceny.

The charges stem from an incident reported between July 23 and Aug. 17. George Spangler, from Mountaineer Investigation and Security, reported that an unknown suspect entered Alpha West Fork Mine sites no. one and no. five and stole approximately $8, 800 in highline cable (copper).

A criminal complaint explains that Farley conspired with Michael Jarvis to steal the copper from the mine sites on multiple occasions.

Investigation revealed that between Aug. 3 2015 and Aug. 17 2015, Michael Jarvis sold approximately 1,997 pounds of copper to H and P Recycling located in Logan W.Va.

On Sept. 14, an officer obtained a statement from Jarvis in which Jarvis admitted to breaking into the mine sites on at least three occasions. In the statement, Jarvis also said that he conspired with Farley to enter the mine sites, steal the copper and sell the stolen copper to H and P Recycling.

Jarvis said both he and Farley profited from the stolen copper. A statement obtained from a witness corroborated the accounts of Jarvis, as the witness said that she had observed Farley burning copper in his backyard on multiple occasions.

Copper is often burned to remove any plastic or insulation from the copper wiring in order to increase the sale price.

Both of the Alpha West Fork mine sites are located in Mingo County.

If convicted, the jail sentence for grand larceny could be one to ten years and fines could be as high as $2,500.

Grand Larceny is defined as taking goods valued above a thousand dollars and is listed as a felony offense.

All information was obtained by use of criminal complaints which are public record. A criminal complaint is merely an accusation and those named should be considered innocent until proven guilty.
