WILLIAMSON – Jada Hunter, President of Action in Mingo (AIM), approached the Williamson City Council at a regular meeting Thursday Nov. 12, to make requests concerning the annual Great White Way Christmas event.

The council approved a request for the Great White Way to take place in downtown Williamson, Dec. 5 from the hours of 9:00 a.m. until the conclusion of the parade. The parade is scheduled for 5 p.m. An award will be given for best parade float.

This year, the Great White Way event will expand to include vendors. Hunter explained that vendors will draw more people to the event. “Another reason we wanted vendors is to get more people out to hear the good Christmas carol music,” Hunter said.

There will be instrumental music from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon. Live music is scheduled from noon until parade time. “They will be singing on the court house steps,” Hunter said. The Mingo Central Choir will be the last to perform before the parade begins.

AIM is asking offices and businesses downtown to assist in the Great White Way by decorating windows and participating in the tree decoration contest. “We are asking all the businesses and offices to light their windows with white lights and decorations. We will give a prize for best decorated window. We have asked all of them also to bring a tree to Tim’s Quality Auto Care and decorate it with the store or offices name and they will receive a prize,” Hunter said.

Hunter also requested that the city participate in a bake-off that will take place in the Cinderella Theater. “We do ask the city to partner with us again for the bake off. In the bake off, $100 will be given for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third. We pay the first place winners. We ask the city to continue the tradition of paying for second and third place which will be $225,” Hunter explained. The council approved the requested $225 donation.

Williamson Memorial will be providing gift bags for the event. Hunter said, “We will receive donations of gift bags to give the children that are there.”

Horse and carriage rides will also be available again this year. The cost will be $5 for adults and $2 for children. “It gets everybody in the Christmas spirit,” Hunter explained.

Vendor applications are available. The cost will be $25. For more information contact Jada Hunter at 304-235-0909.

AIM will meet every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Williamson Fire Station to continue planning the Great White Way event.
