KSP investigates officer involved shooting

- Man charged with attempted murder of a police officer.

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. – On Tuesday, October 20, 2015, Prestonsburg City Police Officers initiated a vehicle pursuit in the Prestonsburg community of Floyd County. The pursuit led to a residence on Abbott Creek, where the accused, Robert Powers, 28, of Auxier, continued to flee the police on foot.

When confronted by officers at a residence, Powers refused to comply with the verbal commands given by the police officers. A Prestonsburg City Police Officer then deployed his issued Taser, which was not effective. Powers continued to ignore officer’s commands, and produced a firearm, shooting Officer Adam Dixon.

Officers returned fire from their service weapons in response to Powers’ actions. Powers managed to then barricade himself inside a residence. Troopers from Post 9, along with Kentucky State Police (KSP) Special Response Team (SRT), responded to the residence.

SRT Troopers were able to locate and arrest Powers from inside the residence.

Powers was transported to Highlands Regional Medical Center where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries due to gunshot wounds. He has been charged with Attempted Murder of a police officer.

Officer Dixon was airlifted from the scene and is currently in stable condition.

This investigation is on-going by KSP Lieutenant Donnie Shearer.
