According to the Stop Coalition, Mingo County has the highest rate of drug addiction and overdose percentage in the state. We are experiencing an epidemic of drug use and overdose on synthetic marijuana as well. Although research teaches us the negative effects of these substances, we see a changing culture becoming more accepting of it in America. With Colorado legalizing marijuana for recreational use, more folks are prioritizing money over health and morals. Sadly, this permissive mindset is trickling down to impact children, destroying numerous families and even claiming many lives. What can be done to reverse this deadly trend? Mingo County needs a spiritual revival that will produce a lasting change.

The Bible addresses drug use in various scriptures and shares a powerful solution. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 teaches us that our body is the temple of the Holy Ghost. We are expected to live in purity and treat our bodies with honor as we are his creation. God cares how we live and wants us to be in good health. To abuse our bodies especially with drugs is definitely sinful and disrespectful to our Creator. In this scripture, God reminds us that we were bought with a price and that would be the blood of Jesus. In addition, 1 Peter 5:8 instructs us to be sober minded and vigilant. Also, that we have an adversary who is seeking to devour like a lion. When we are intoxicated by alcohol or by substances, we lose rational thinking and tend to make destructive choices. Satan is devouring many through this avenue so people need to be on guard. It also is vital that the Church prays specifically and address this issue.

The rise of drug addiction really reveals a moral deficit. Those who are high on substances are on a low spiritually. There is a void deep in the core of their being. The only way to fill this void and break the chain of addiction is through Jesus Christ. He was manifested to destroy the works of the devil and conquered sin at the cross. If you are struggling with this issue, know that there is a God in heaven who loves you and has a plan for you. Put your faith in Christ and seek him for deliverance. The God who created the heavens and earth in just 6 days will have no problem setting you free. If we commit to God he will commit to us and take care of our needs. If any man or women is in Christ, they become a new creature and God will make all things new!
