=CHARLESTON — A Dingess woman pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to charges relating to prescription drug abuse.

Lisa K. Baisden, aka Lisa Spaulding, 43, worked in Dr. Diane Shafer’s office between 2004 and 2009. She admitted giving pre-signed prescriptions to people who were not patients of Dr. Shafer.

Baisden is charged with conspiracy to obtain controlled substances by misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, deception or subterfuge.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Baisden would remove pre-signed prescriptions from patients charts and give them to individuals in return for a portion of the pills for her own use.

Shafer closed her office and surrendered her DEA certificationwhen Baisden was accused.

Shafer’s home and office were searched during a recent raid of a pain clinic in Williamson, although no charges have been filed. According to the sate Board of Medicine, there are four disciplinary cases pending against Shafer, however, none are related to the investigation of the pain clinic or the case against Baisden.

Baisden, who is scheduled to be sentenced on June 22, faces up to four years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The Drug Enforcement Administration, West Virginia State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services-OIG, conducted the investigation.
