CHARLESTON (AP) — Jury selection is set to begin in April for the federal retrial of a West Virginia man accused of ordering a drug informant murdered in Mingo County.

George Lecco could face the death penalty if convicted on key charges in the case, which stems from the 2005 killing of Carla Collins.

A 2005 jury had found Lecco and co-defendant Valerie Friend guilty on all charges. A juror’s dishonesty at that trial later wiped out those verdicts.

Friend has since pleaded guilty to a role in the slaying. She told prosecutors last month that Lecco wanted Collins dead to protect his Mingo County cocaine operation. Collins had been helping area drug investigators.

Lecco remains in jail. West Virginia abolished capital punishment for state crimes. That ban does not apply to federal cases.
