DELBARTON - A weekend accident claimed the life of a Delbarton man in an accident still under investigation.

According to Delbarton Police Chief Steve Hughes, 72-year-old Alton Mounts, of Rameytown, was driving on a license that had been revoked for unpaid citations.

Mounts was traveling north near Phil Sizemore stadium when he lost control of his vehicle, a Hyundai Elantra. Mounts’ car left the highway, turned over several times and landed in Pigeon Creek on its top.

“Some passersby saw the accident, and thought Mounts’ wife was in the car,” Hughes said. “They turned the car back over, but his wife was not in the vehicle.”

Mounts was transported to Williamson Memorial Hospital by Stat Ambulance, then airlifted to Cabell-Huntington Hospital, where he died.

The accident is still being investigated, Hughes said. It has not been determined what caused Mounts to lose control of his vehicle. The Delbarton Police Department is awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

Hughes was assisted on scene by Delbarton Officer Dave Nunley and the West Virginia State Police.
