No, it wasn’t seismic phenomena or giant gophers that made the landscape near the intersection of Second Avenue and Court Street resemble an obstacle course that had to be negotiated by pedestrians such as the one in the photo above with the Coal House in the background. The large hole in the pavement was one of several that workers had dug and filled in over the past few days as they checked utility lines near the Mountaineer Hotel in search of a problem reported by employees of the hotel. Work was continuing Monday afternoon as a backhoe had opened up another hole in the pavement on Second Avenue in front of the hotel building.
