GOODY, Ky. – The Belfry Pirates got an early lead and went on to sink the visiting Mingo Central Miners 17-6 Tuesday at Massey Energy Field on the campus of Belfry High School.
Belfry took a 7-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back.
In the Belfry 1st, Keaton Taylor struck out, however he reached first base on an error by the catcher on the third strike. Taylor then stole second and went to 3rd base on another error and Reed Williamson was hit by a pitch.
Joey Duty lined an RBI single to right field for a 1-0 lead. Zac Fields walked to load the bases and Trenity Carr got an RBI bases loaded walk
Jordan Meddings hit a long sac fly to center field to bring in another run. Garrett Fannin smacked an RBI single to left field and Carr scored on a wild pitch.
Then Taylor came up for the second time in the inning and lined a 2-run single to left field.
Mingo got on the board in the 2nd inning. Tyler Harrison walked, then went to 2nd base and 3rd base on a wild pitch. Pitcher Kenny Allen helped his own cause with an RBI single to center field, then Todd Slone stroked a double to center. Allen and Slone scored on separate wild pitches to cut the Pirate lead to 7-3.
Belfry added another run in the 2nd framed as Zac Fields reached safely on an error. Then T. Carr singled to left and BHS scored another run to make it 8-1.
In bottom of the 3rd inning for Belfry, Garret Fannin got to first base on an error. With two outs, Williamson cracked a single to left, followed by a Joey Duty RBI single. Fannin had scored on an RBI grounder to short by K. Taylor and T. Carr smacked an RBI single to center field.
In the 4th inning, Mingo Central’s Allen doubled to center and then scored on an RBI groundout to by Peyton Harmon.
Belfry got an insurance run in the 4th frame as Fannin stroked a single to left and later scored on RBI fielder’s choice.
Mingo got two more runs in the 6th frame, both were due to three Belfry errors.
Belfry got five more runs in the 6th inning. Nate Sanger reached safely on an infield error, then K. Taylor cracked a double to center field. Then Williamson walked and Aaron Taylor smacked an RBI single to center. Sanger had scored on a wild pitch. Zac Fields then smashed a 3-run home run over left field fence.
Belfry had 12 hits in the game and were helped by six errors by the Miners.
Kenny Allen was the losing pitcher for the Miners. MCHS is coached by first-year head coach Josh Sammons.
Dustin Jewell got the win in relief for the Pirates of coach Michael Hagy.
Belfry (8-4) was scheduled to play at Sheldon Clark on Wednesday. Mingo Central is 0-4 and was slated to play at Scott today, weather permitting.
