BELFRY, Ky. - The Tug Valley area is coming together this weekend for a common cause to assure a local teenager that she is not alone in her time of need.
Casey Maynard, 16, a sophomore at Belfry High School, was diagnosed a year ago with Ewings Sarcoma bone cancer. Doctors have told Casey there is nothing else they can do to help her, but her friends, family and fellow students are determined to continue showing their support and love as they rally around her to remind her that this fight is not hers alone.
Casey’s family and friends believe in miracles and many a prayer has been said for her healing, which is why they refuse to give up hope and are continuing to fight to help her family in any way they can.
On Saturday, weather permitting, they will gather at the Belfry High School football field between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. in her honor, and will host a walk to assist in raising funds for her family. The costs to participate will be $10 for adults and $5 for students.
Casey has missed a great deal of school because of her illness. If she is up to it this weekend, she plans to attend. All of the proceeds from the event will go toward medical costs and future planning for the teen. In addition, local businesses have donated items to be prizes in a chance drawing.
T-shirts supporting Casey with the words “Fight Like a Girl” will be available for purchase.
