66th Annual Mingo County Spelling Bee held at Gilbert

The 66th Annual Mingo County Spelling Bee was held at Gilbert Middle School on December 18, 2013 at 6 p.m.

There were 10 schools registered to participate, with 22 students eligible to attend.

The winning word, tycoon, was correctly spelled in round seven by Jacquelyn Compton, a 6th grade student at Lenore PreK-8. The runner-up was Derek Duty, an 8th grade student at Matewan PreK-8.

Trophies were presented by Mr. Randy Keathley, Superintendent of Schools.

There are two alternates, Chandra Hardin and Tera Evans. Chandra is a 5th grade student at Matewan PreK-8 and Tera Evans is a 7th grade student at Burch Middle school. The winner and runner-up will be able to participate in the Gazette-Mail Regional Spelling Bee that will be held at 1 p.m., March 22, 2014 at Capital High School.

The 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held in the Washington, D.C. area the week of May 25, 2014.
