WILLIAMSON - The Mingo Investigative Team will host a press conference at 11 a.m. today in the Mingo County Commission Courtroom to announce the results of the team’s first full year of work on cases involving child abuse and sex abuse against children crimes within the county.
During 2013, Mingo County saw a dramatic increase in the number of prosecutions of crimes against children. The press conference will be held to identify the number of cases and also information about the coordinated effort from many agencies that assisted not only in providing help for the victims, but prosecuting and convicting the perpetrators who preyed on the most vulnerable individuals.
All members of the IMDT Team are expected to attend the event. Speakers will include Beth Cook, who serves as executive director of the Logan County Child Advocacy Center; Teresa Maynard, Mingo County Prosecuting Attorney; and Sgt. L. D. Hensley of the West Virginia State Police Crimes Against Children Unit. At the conclusion of the conference, the public will be granted an opportunity for a question-and-answer session with the team.
It is very important to the IMDT that the public becomes aware of the positive work being done by these dedicated professionals to keep the children of Mingo County safe, who work tirelessly to identify offenders and hold them accountable for their actions. Data on numbers of individuals being prosecuted and the outcomes of those cases will be available at the press conference.
