TAYLORVILLE - A physical altercation that occurred on Saturday at the Miner Mart at Taylorville took a serious turn that resulted in a local resident receiving a life-threatening injury.
According to the criminal complaint filed in Mingo County Magistrate Court by Sheriff’s Deputy M.J. Mounts, David Manns, 30, of Delbarton, was preparing to get gas at the Miner Mart. Joe Harmon, age and address unknown, also arrived at the store and is said to have approached Manns, and the situation soon became heated with Manns allegedly the aggressor.
Manns is said to have left the gas station, heading south on U.S. 52, in the same direction as Harmon. When the two vehicles arrived at the intersection of the new U.S. 52 (King Coal Highway), the defendant slammed his truck into the car operated by Harmon, causing several thousand dollars worth of damage, the police report said. After leaving their vehicles, the two men became involved in a heated argument during which Harmon was stabbed in the front of the neck, causing what was described as a large gash that spanned a length of several inches, the complaint said.
Harmon managed to drive back to the Mini Mart to seek help and to notify police of the assault, deputies said. Upon arrival at the scene, Deputy Mounts said he discovered Harmon lying on the floor bleeding profusely, with a tourniquet around his neck. The officer said he questioned the victim and he identified his attacker as being Manns.
While Mounts tended to the victim, troopers with the West Virginia State Police went to the residence of Manns and placed him under arrest on charges of malicious wounding and felony destruction of property, the complaint said.
The victim was takento a local hospital, where he remains a patient at this time, listed in stable condition, according to authorities.
Manns was arraigned before Magistrate Pam Newsome and was remanded to the custody of the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden on a $10,000 bond. He was released on Sunday after making bail, court records show.
