There is plenty of good basketball in the area starting this weekend.

The Williamson Fieldhouse will be the site of a big game tonight as Sheldon Clark plays host to Knott County Central.

Knott Central is one of the top ranked teams in Kentucky. They are led by junior Camron Justice, who recently scored his 2,000th career point. He is the son of former Belfry coach and basketball player Raymond Justice.

The Cardinals are coached by Frankie Smith and come into the game 5-0. They are led by Chase Parsley and Dylan James, two of the top players in the region.

This should be a great game and will be a good test for the Martin County school. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

… Tug Valley will get its first real test of the season as they travel to Westside tonight. Westside is ranked No. 3 in the Class AA pre-season poll. The Panthers were ranked No. 6 in class A.

This should be an early season trial for coach Rabbit Thompson’s squad.

… Mingo Central basketball coach Brad Napier and his wife Cindy are set to be proud parents of a bouncing baby boy – no pun intended.

Cindy was expecting their new son on Thursday.

Congrats to the coach and his wife. I’m sure all local basketball fans are happy for you and the newest member of your family.

Mingo Central will play Bridgeport Saturday morning in the Hoops Classic at the Charleston Civic Center. Tipoff is slated for 10:30 a.m.

… The Lady Pirate Invitational is scheduled for tonight and Saturday at the Belfry High gym. Several good games are on tap for that basketball event.

… The annual Mountain Schoolboy Classic, started several years ago at Belfry High School, will be held again this coming week at the BHS gym at Goody, Ky.

There is a full slate of games on Thursday, Friday and Saturday – December 26th , 27th and 28th. Check Sunday’s edition of the Williamson Daily News for a full schedule of that 3-day event.

… WVU’s home game against Purdue on Sunday, Dec. 22 is a Gold Rush, presented by EZToUSE.com. All fans attending the game are encouraged to wear gold for the final home non-conference game of the season.

Family Day packages are still available for the Purdue game. Four tickets, four drinks, four hot dogs and one bucket of popcorn can be purchased for $60 online at WVUGAME.com. Family Day packages must be ordered by 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20 and cannot be purchased on game day.

The Mountaineer Ticket Office in the Coliseum will be closed Dec. 24-26. Tickets for William & Mary in Charleston and all other home men’s and women’s basketball games are always available through the holiday at WVUGAME.com. The Charleston Civic Center Box Office will close at noon on Tuesday, Dec. 24 and will be closed Dec. 25.

… WVU signed four highly ranked junior college (JUCO) football recruits this week. One is a quarterback, one is a linebacker, one an offensive lineman and the other a defensive back. (See related story on this page.)
