VAN – The Tug Valley Panthers went on the road to Boone County Friday night and came away with a thrilling 44-38 overtime win against the Van Bulldogs.
With only 58 seconds left in regulation, Tug Valley took the lead as sophomore quarterback Tyler Conley connected with split end Aaron Copley on a 57 yard touchdown pass. Conley then ran it in for the 2-point conversion to give the Panthers a 38-0 lead.
However, Van did not give up. With only 19 remaining on the clock, Van’s Brandon Elswick threw a strike to Justin Lambert for an18 yard TD pass. Elswick then hit Lambert in the end zone with a 2-point conversion pass to tie the game at 38-38 and send the game into overtime.
Senior tailback David Runyon hit pay-dirt on a 2-yard touchdown run in overtime to give Tug Valley the win. (There was no conversion needed or attempted.)
The Panthers led 8-7 after one quarter of play and 22-14 at the half. The home team outscored Tug Valley 14-8 in the third quarter and 10-8 in the fourth quarter in the comeback bid.
Van got what proved to be an important safety in the final quarter at the 8:47 mark to tie the game at 30-30. The play involved a Tug Valley punt from the end zone and the high snap proved to be costly for the Panthers.
On offense Tug Valley rolled up 356 yards, while Van had 392 total yards of offense.
The Panthers had 46 rushing attempts for 200 yards and they had 156 yards in the air. Tug Valley had 11 penalties for 117 yards.
Van had 37 carries for 178 yards rushing and 214 yards passing for their total on offense. The Bulldogs had 13 penalties for 118 yards.
Runyon had 11 carries for 66 yards and one TD for Tug Valley, 11 attempts for 56 yards and two TDs, Phillip Lucas eight carries for 43 yards and a score, Justin Baisden nine attempts for 32 yards and one TD and Conley seven carries for three yards.
Copley caught passes for 95 yards and one TD, Lucas had three catches for 44 yards and Runyon one reception for 17 yards. Conley was 7-of-9 passing for 156 yards, one TD and one interception.
On defense Tug Valley saw Conley lead them with 11 tackles, Thomas Baisden had eight tackles, two for loss and two sacks, while Dwayne Marcum had seven tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack and one forced fumble.
Van quarterback Brandon Elswick threw for four touchdowns, two of them to Lambert and he also ran for another score.
Tug Valley is now 3-5 on the season and will have a bye week, while Van dropped to 3-4 and will take on Clay Battelle on the road this Friday.
