SOMERSET, Ky. – Belfry’s powerful running attack continued to roll up the points as the Pirates beat Southwestern of Pulaski County 38 to 27 on Friday night.
However, the Pirates really had to battle to come away with their third victory of the season. Belfry has now made two straight, but successful long road trips in the past two weeks.
Coach Philip Haywood’s team only led 24-20 at the half against the bigger 5A school and had to hold off the Warriors late to pull out the victory.
Belfry only led 38-27 late in the game and their young defense rose to the occasion to halt another scoring drive by the home team.
The Pirates got a pair of rushing touchdowns from both Austin Hatfield and Sani Warren, and one from Justin Johnson. Austin Woolum booted the five extra points for the Pirates.
Junior running back Austin Hatfield led Belfry with 165 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Speedy senior Justin Johnson rushed for 130 yards on 10 carries, while senior power back Trenity Carr had 53 yards on nine carries. Senior signal caller Sani Warren completed 5-of-9 passes for 71 yards.
Belfry rushed 51 times for 461 yards and had a total of 532 total yards in the game.
Belfry allowed 269 yards on the ground to Southwestern, but just 24 in the air.
On defense for the Pirates Hayden Hatfield had 13 tackles, with five solo stops, Austin Hall had 10 tackles, Dakota Stanley nine, Joey Duty eight tackles and Michael Barnes seven.
Belfry will host county rival Pikeville this Friday night at CAM Stadium.
