Mingo Central could be dubbed the cardiac kids so far this season. Each of their first two games has gone down to the final seconds.

They lost a one point heartbreaker in their home opener 27-26 against Wyoming East and then held on to win a 20-19 game at Tolsia last week.

No doubt the Miner fans have been on pins and needles so far this season.

The Mingo Central Miners will head north to take on Webster Springs this Friday in Upperglade, W.Va.

Webster County is a new school on the schedule. Their nickname is the Highlanders and the school colors are red and black,. They play in the Class AA division like MCHS.

They have lost their first two games to Richwood and Ravenswood.

The offensive rushing leaders for the Miners include Chance Lester with 18 carries for 122 yards and two TDs, Deonte Joplin with 21 carries for 121 yards, Chase Justice 11 tries for 70 yards and a score and Dekwon Willis has 20 totes for 70 yards and a TD.

Joplin had a 73 yard kickoff return last week at Tolsia for a touchdown.

Sophomore quarterback Stevie Hammond has 18 carries for 30 yards, but has been sacked so that has hurt his rushing total. He has scored one TD. Hammond has completed 12 passes in 24 attempts for 146 yards and a touchdown.

Alex “Booger” Lee has six catches for 96 yards, while Lester has caught two passes for 22 yards and a TD.

On defense the Miners have been led by Ethan Collins, Zack Holt, Lee and several others. Brandon Blankenship will miss the game again this week due to an injury he suffered in the first game.

Assistant coach Joey Fields said that Mingo Central’s younger players are getting better and have learned a lot in the first two games. He and the rest of the coaching staff believe the team will get better each week as the season progresses.

The game at Webster County is slated to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The game can be heard on WXCC 96.5 FM with Joe Kinzer providing the play by play and Pedro Ledger with color commentary and stats.
