Marking the 12th anniversary of the events which occurred in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, local business Cash Express presented a cake and card of thanks to the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.
Each year, the business selects a different first responding agency for a presentation of appreciation, marking the tragic events on that date.
“We do this each year to show our support to the first responders of Harlan County and to honor the memory of Sept. 11,” said Manager Kristina Lemarr. “We have a large cake made, decorated as an American flag, and go about the community and have them sign a card of thanks to be presented. This year we chose the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office.”
Harlan County Sheriff Marvin Lipfird said it is “heart warming” to see local businesses support first responders in this way, especially in honor of Sept. 11.
Lipfird said on Sept. 11, 2001, so many first responders died trying to help others. He said Harlan County has never forgotten the sacrifices made and lives lost on that day.
