It’s the time of year many fans have been waiting for – football action as lights will be gleaming over many of the area’s high school stadiums tonight.
Most of the area teams will hit the field for their season openers.
Up on the mountain above Red Jacket, the Mingo Central Miners will play host to Wyoming East. The Miners have opened with their neighbors to the south for three straight seasons now. Mingo won its first ever game at Buck Harless Stadium defeating the Warriors. However, last year Wyoming East turned the table and beat the Miners on their home field.
Belfry will host Somerset in the 29th Annual Pike County Bowl at CAM Stadium. The Pirates take on a very athletic Somerset team. The Briar Jumpers have one of the most unique nicknames for their sports teams of any school in the nation.
Tug Valley will entertain Sherman in their opener. The Sherman Tide also has a great nickname. They will tangle with the Panthers at Naugatuck and the game is expected to be quite a battle.
Sheldon Clark will play host to Prestonsburg in the Callaway Bowl. The young Cardinals have their work cut out for them this season.
Meanwhile, the Phelps Hornets are the only team that already has a game under its belt. They will host Betsy Layne at Vipperman Stadium. The young Hornets lost a tough 36-34 game last week to Jenkins.
Another game in our region includes Pike Central taking on Henry Clay in the first game of the Pike County Bowl at Belfry tonight. That game is set to kickoff at 6:00 p.m. The Belfry game will begin at approximately 8:35 p.m.
Other games in southern West Virginia include Logan at Man, Sissonville at Chapmanville, Scott at Herbert Hoover and Liberty Raleigh at Westside. All of the other games are slated to kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
College games of interest to local fans on Saturday include William & Mary up in Morgantown to take on the WVU Mountaineers, Miami of Ohio in Huntington to tangle with the Marshall Thundering Herd and Kentucky will take on Western Kentucky in Nashville, TN. The WVU game starts at 12 noon, while the MU and UK games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
