CHARLESTON – The Charleston Daily Mail has released its pre-season all-state team and three players from Mingo County made the “watch list” and honorable mention list.

They are Mingo Central seniors Alex Lee and linebacker Drew Kirk, along with Tug Valley fullback David Runyon.

Lee caught 27 passes for 429 yards for an average of almost 16 yards a catch. He had six touchdowns. He was also a starter on defense where he played defensive back. Lee is also a kick returner and punter for the Miners of head coach Yogi Kinder.

Kirk was the leading tackler for the Miners last season. He also starts on the offensive line. Kirk has hit the weight room hard in the off season and is much stronger this year.

Tug Valley’s Runyon was is one of the only returning starters in the back field for the Panthers. The senior had a solid junior season, sharing carries with several other back. He will be relied on much more this season by head coach Tony Clusky. Runyon has also been hitting the weights hard in the off season.

Expect a good season from all of these three Mingo County players. There are other players who will likely step up and could receive honors at the end of the season.

Mingo Central opens up at home on August 30 as they play host to Wyoming East. Tug Valley opens its season the same night playing host to Sherman.

Practice starts Monday for West Virginia schools.
