VIRGIE, Ky. – Two teenagers were killed in an early morning traffic accident on Friday on Ky. Route 3501.
Kentucky State Police (KSP) identified the victims as 18-year old Jonathan Newsome of Teabury, Ky. and Alexandrea Tipton, also 18, of Harold, Ky.
KSP Post 9, Pikeville, received a call of a single vehicle accident at Ky. Route 3501 and Ky. 1469 at 2:05 a.m.
Information obtained at the scene by KSP troopers indicates that Newsome was operating a 1999 Mustang traveling south on Ky. Route 3501 when he failed to negotiate a turn onto Ky. Route 1469.
The vehicle that Newsome was operating then struck an earth embankment at the intersection of Ky. Route 1469. Newsome and Tipton, who was a passenger, were both pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Coroner Russell Roberts.
The vehicle operated by Newsome was occupied with seven passengers. The accident report states that Newsome and the seven occupants of the vehicle were not wearing seatbelts.
The incident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police Accident Reconstructionist Trooper Bryan Layne.
Layne was assisted on scene by Trooper Ryan Hamilton, Trooper Nick Hale and the Transtar Ambulance Service.
At time of news release the KSP did not have an update on the condition of the other passengers.
