After their showing in the recent Class AA regional track meet, Mingo Central has qualified for several events in the state tournament which will be held this Friday and Saturday at Laidley Field in Charleston.
The Miner’s 4 x 100 relay team of Dakweon Willis, Austin Banks, Alex Lee and Garrett Moore qualified for the state meet.
Lee, a junior sprinter, also qualifies for both the 100 meter and the 200 meter races.
Senior Austin Banks qualified to compete in the long jump.
“We had a good showing at the regionals considering the rain that fell the whole meet. The team was upset because Joe May was out on our relay teams, but he was named as an alternate and will get to run at state on the 4 x 100,” said Mingo track coach Brad Webb. May has been ill and has actually been in a local hospital the past few days.
“Dakweon Willis stepped up on the relay and helped make it happen in the absence of Joe (May),” Webb said. “Austin (Banks) has improved each week in the long jump and has followed in his dad’s footsteps with making it to state.”
“Also, Alex Lee made great strides in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash and hopes to make some noise at the state meet. I want to say I am really proud of this team for making great strides during the season and often referring to themselves in practice as family,” Webb added. “That speaks volumes to me on how well everyone gets along with each other. The Wes Tests are this week and the only day we can practice is Thursday, due to state law and that puts us in a tough place, but I am hoping we can come through in a difficult time.”
“I just want to give thanks to a few people on the season. I have been mentored by Stanley Bryant, who is Naples High School track and field coach in Naples, Florida. He has allowed me to sit in on practices and learn from his team. I can’t say how much I learned in just a few days. I want to say thanks to David Jones and Virdell Banks for everything they have helped me with this year.”
Webb also thanked the parents for their continued support and to the administration at Mingo Central.
“Our events will be as followed: Austin Banks will be in long jump finals Friday at 2 p.m. , Alex Lee will run in the 100 and 200 dash at 4:20 p.m.. and 6:05 p.m. on Friday. The relay team will compete on Saturday for the 100 and 200 meter dash finals,” Webb said.
“I hope to see everyone at state’s which will be at Laidley Field in Charleston on Friday and Saturday,” Webb concluded.
